Release of the last group of political prisoners from Shah’s prisons

On January 20, 1979, the last group of political prisoners, including 162 prisoners that had been sentenced to life imprisonment in the Shah’s regime’s military courts were released. Massoud Rajavi, Moussa Khiabani, and Ashraf Rajavi were among those prisoners.

Following the rise of protesting moves against Shah’s dictatorial regime since late 1978 until January 20, 1979 thousands of political prisoners were released from prisons across Iran but the Iranian people didn’t give up; thousands of youths along with the families of political prisoners staged sit-in outside of the Qasr prison and chanted ” free political prisoners”; the people were concerned of possible conspiracies of the Shah’s dictatorial regime against the lives of the PMOI leaders. Ultimately, last group of political prisoners were released on January 20, 1979.

The Kayhan daily wrote on January 21, 1979: “To ensure the people of releasing political prisoners, one of the prisoners went behind microphone; while being applauded by the emotional sensations of the people, Massoud Rajavi said: ” Is there any word by which one could be able to appreciate you, the people? Truly, we owe this freedom to you, not to any other person or any special group.”
